YNDC Holds Public Open House at 3726 Glenwood Avenue

On Tuesday, October 10, YNDC held a public open house at the newly revitalized home at 3726 Glenwood Avenue. The historic 5 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom home was available to tour from 5:30pm-6:30pm and over 150 people attended to view the finished product of YNDC’s largest home rehabilitation project to date. Predatory Land Contracts Discussed at Public A.C.T.I.O.N. Meeting

On Sunday, October 29, residents, city leaders, and congregation leaders from across the city attended the A.C.T.I.O.N. public meeting at Mt. Zion Baptist Church to discuss ongoing issues with predatory land contracts and food deserts. YNDC Executive Director Ian Beniston and Housing Director Tiffany Sokol joined State Rep. Michele Lepore-Hagan and Atty. Patricia Dugan from Community Legal Aid to discuss the dangers of entering into predatory land contracts and some strategies to address loopholes in the Ohio Revised Code that allow many out-of-state companies to take advantage of low-income citizens. YNDC Begins Glenwood Corridor Tree Planting

On Monday, October 23, the YNDC Tree Corps began planting trees in vacant lots along the Glenwood Avenue Corridor. Holes were dug and prepared the week of October 16, and as of October 31 all 125 trees have been planted. Read more.

Burton D. Morgan Foundation Awards YNDC with $30,000 Grant for Small Business Development

On October 11, the Burton D. Morgan Foundation awarded YNDC with a $30,000 grant for to support microenterprise programming and the Mahoning Valley is for Entrepreneurs initiative. Read more.

PNC Foundation Awards YNDC with $9,000 for Community Financial Literacy Initiative

The PNC Foundation has awarded YNDC with $9,000 for the Community Financial Literacy Initiative. The funds will support YNDC's comprehensive homeownership development services, including HUD-Certified Housing Counseling and Education, as well as the organization's small business development programming. Volunteers Help Rehabilitate 2906 Glenwood Avenue

On Saturday, October 21, thirty-four volunteers began rehabilitation of the historic 4-unit building at 2906 Glenwood Avenue during the Idora Neighborhood Workday. Volunteers removed old furnaces, ductwork, and water heaters from the basement, restored the storefront facade to its original brick construction, repaired drywall, installed doors, painted the rear porch, pulled staples, and cleaned up the yard. YNDC Partners with YSUscape for Make A Difference Day Workday

On Saturday, October 28, twenty-one volunteers helped clean and board up homes on the North Side as part of the Make a Difference Day workday with YSUscape. Volunteers from The Jambar, YSU Hockey, YSU Honors College, and YSUscape removed 40 cubic yards of debris and trash, 20 cubic yards of brush, and 64 illegally dumped tires. Read more.

Rep. Lepore-Hagan Introduces Fair Lending through Land Contracts Act

On Friday, October 13, YNDC Executive Director Ian Beniston joined State Representative Michele Lepore-Hagan and community leaders at 226 East Lucius Avenue to introduce House Bill 368, the Fair Lending through Land Contracts Act. The bill aims to regulate land contract agreements and cut down on predatory practices by large, out-of-state firms. Read more.
