YNDC has established a Neighborhood Champion Award that will honor three Youngstown residents who have stood up and taken action to improve their neighborhood. Three selected Champions will receive $1,000 each for a neighborhood improvement project of their choice! The nomination form can be downloaded here and dropped off or mailed to the YNDC office located at 820 Canfield Road, Youngstown, OH 44511, or emailed to Tom Hetrick at thetrick@yndc.org.

The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley and YNDC are partnering with the City of Youngstown and the American Red Cross to host the fourth annual Day of Caring on September 1, 2017. Many volunteers will focus on cleaning and securing numerous homes and properties on the East Side of Youngstown with YNDC. Sign up today on the United Way website!

On Thursday, July 20, construction began to improve infrastructure around Taft Elementary. Sidewalks will be replaced where necessary, curb ramps will be installed to meet ADA-compliance, and new sidewalks will be installed on Homestead St. Read more

On Wednesday, July 12, leaders and representatives from neighborhoods across the City of Youngstown gathered at YNDC for the first Citywide Neighborhood Action Team meeting. Residents discussed issues facing their respective neighborhoods and, through a number of exercises, were able to pinpoint common problems that affect residents throughout the city. Read more

On Monday, July 31, the YNDC team welcomed two new AmeriCorps VISTAs! Alaina Wells and Isabel Pedraja will be serving at YNDC and Drew Canfield will be serving as AmeriCorps VISTA leader. On Saturday, July 15, AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) team Cedar 3 arrived in Youngstown to fight blight with YNDC for six weeks. The team is composed of Team Leader Kristina Ray, Jodie Cruz, Aurelia Mancilla, Sophie Pratt, Kimberly Reyes, and James Thomason. Read more

On Friday, July 21, YNDC presented its first all-day version of the Bright Idea to Business Plan course to 20 students working to start or expand their businesses. The class was held at the Williamson College of Business with the assistance of the Small Business Development Center at YSU. The course included sessions on personal finance, marketing, legal concerns, pricing, cash flow, and lending options. Read more

On July 12, 2017, Bernadette began moving into her brand new Idora Neighborhood home at 759 Pineview Avenue. Bernadette said she was drawn to the Idora Neighborhood because her street is so quiet, her neighbors take very good care of their yards, and because she loves the brick home. Read more

Pop-Up Bike Rodeo Visits Lynn Park Summer Day Camp

On Wednesday, July 19th, YNDC visited the Youngstown Parks Department’s Summer Day Camp program at Lynn Park with a Pop-Up Bike Rodeo! A Bike Rodeo is an event that teaches safe bicycling behaviors to youth. Campers were instructed on the proper way to wear a helmet, how to start and stop the bike, and practiced their skills riding on the trail throughout the park. Read more

On Saturday, July 22, nine volunteers helped clean up the corner of West Princeton Avenue and Market Street. Volunteers from The Colony, Progress Mahoning Valley, West Princeton Avenue Block Watch, YSU Honors College, YSUscape, and YNDC removed 10 cubic yards of trash and 10 cubic yards of brush. Read more

On Saturday, July 29, twenty-five volunteers helped clean up vacant properties at the Greater McGuffey Workday on the East Side. Volunteers removed 60 cubic yards of debris and 20 tires from 6 vacant homes. Read more

On Saturday, July 15, eighteen volunteers helped clean up 2691 McFarland Avenue at the Idora Neighborhood Volunteer Workday. Volunteers cut down 6 trees and remove 44 cubic yards of debris from the property. Read more
